Virtual Tape Libraries
For most large organisations is the question that needs to be answered is; how can more data be backed up in less time with the same budget.

The reality today is, that within most organisations, there is more data to back up and there is less planned down time in which to complete these backups. In addition there is pressure for more frequent backups and faster restores all of which must be provided within existing budgets.
Virtual Tape Libraries (VTL) help solve some of the above issues. VTL's are disk subsystems that use tape emulation to appear as physical tape libraries and tape drives to backup software. This capability is important for the following reasons:
- VTL's provide for the non-disruptive introduction of disk into existing backup operations.
- VTL's offer flexibility without complex disk administration.
- VTL's happily co-exist with physical tape and allow backup performance to be maximised.
- VTL's help lower the cost of ownership of disk through compression and deduplication
AIL Consulting has been involved with VTL technology since early 2008 and this technology perfectly complements our expertise in the design and tuning of backup and recovery systems.
